What You Need To Know About A Portable Braille Display

The PAC Mate Portable Braille Display is supplied by Freedom Scientific and is available in both 20 and 40-cell modes powered by a host computer.  The host computer includes a laptop, desktop computer or the PAC Mate using JAWS® reading technology which offers the most recent updates in refreshable Braille display technology.


There are 14 hotkeys with 21 on-demand functions in this newest version which is light for carrying, easy to use and to connect. The Pac Mate Portable Braille Display includes the following features: Mini B USB port, Cursor routing buttons, Whiz Wheels® are installed on the Braille Display on either side of the keys for ease of use, Right and left advance buttons, Braille Display hot keys, Varibraille Dot firmness, Compatibility with JAWS. These items are included with the Braille Display : a 20 or 40 cell Braille display, a 3-ft USB a-Mini B cable, a 6-ft USB A-Mini B cable, a carrying case with shoulder strap, a quick start guide in Braille, a companion CD which include device drivers and documentation, and a foam keyboard stand. There is a 12 month warranty on the Portable Braille Display against manufacturing defects.

Versions of JAWS technology earlier than version 4.02 cannot be used on the PAC Mate Braille Display. The installation for Windows XP you will need to use the Install the software automatically radio button. For Windows 98, ME, and 2000 the process installs automatically.  The foam stand should be placed at a comfortable distance for you to work, place the foam stand on the table or desk, with cut away area facing you, the cut out for the USV connector should be on the left. The Braille Display slides into the cut away area.

The Portable Braille Display settings can be accessed quickly using the hot keys. Quick access via the hot keys to the various Braille display options is available. These hotkey are in the top row of buttons on either side of the center mark, with 7 buttons on either side being hot keys. There are markers to help you identify and locate these buttons on the display’s surface which is the furthest side away from you. All these hot key buttons are numbered, left of center are 1 to 7 and right of center are 8 to 14.  The extra buttons next to these are the advance buttons. Using JAWS as the desktop screen reader the hot keys can be customised.

The dimensions of the Portable Braille Display are 20 –Cell:  4.8 x 11 x 1.53 inches. (12.19 cm x 27.94 cm x 3.89 cm). With the weight being:  1 lb 12 oz (0.79 kg). The 40-Cell’s weight is: 2 lb 3 oz (0.99 kg) and the dimensions are: 4.8 x 12.5 x 1.53 inches (12.19 cm x 31.75 cm x 3.89 cm). The price for the PAC Mate BX420 and also the QX420 that have the 20 cell display is $3795. The 40 cell display(PAC Mate BX440 and QX440 is priced at $5595. There is also a yearly product maintenance and software agreement that costs between $50 and $225.
